Combination Bachelor’s/MPH

The combination bachelor’s/M.P.H. degree program is available to exceptional University of Florida (UF) undergraduate students from any major/college who have a genuine interest in public health.

Program overview

This program allows students to get a head start on their graduate education by taking approved graduate M.P.H. courses during their undergraduate degree program. A minimum of 9 and a maximum of 15 graduate-level credits, can (but are not required to) count toward both degrees, reducing the time and money it takes to get two separate degrees!

Applicants apply to one of the five primary M.P.H. concentrations: Biostatistics, Environmental Health, Epidemiology, Population Health Management (campus or online), or Social and Behavioral Sciences (campus or online). Attending an M.P.H. Concentrations Panel is recommended to explore which concentration is the best fit for you. Applications are accepted for both fall and spring admission; please review the application deadlines below.

Students in the combination degree program are recognized for their academic achievement with a salmon-colored honor cord, worn at their bachelor’s and master’s commencement ceremonies. During their final undergraduate semester, students complete the UF Graduate School application and transition seamlessly from undergraduate to graduate status. After earning their bachelor’s degree, students continue as graduate students to complete the remaining M.P.H. requirements. With only 33 credits remaining after the bachelor’s degree, many students can complete the rest of the program in approximately three semesters. Combination degree graduates leave with advanced public health training, strengthened professional and academic credentials, and enhanced competitiveness for employment, fellowships, and professional school admissions. For students planning a growth or gap year before professional school, the combination degree offers an opportunity to earn a second degree and enter the next stage of their career with a distinct advantage.

Eligibility requirements

Students applying for the program are required to meet the following requirements.

Classification

Junior classification by credit (60+ credits).

Current UF undergraduate sophomores (who will meet or exceed 60 credits before starting the program), juniors, and seniors from any major are eligible to apply.

Prerequisite coursework

Minimum: Completed STA 2023, BSC 2005 or BSC 2010, and PSY 2012 with a grade of C or better. Credits earned from accelerated mechanisms such as AP, AICE, and Dual Enrollment are accepted.

Competitive applicants tend to have a B average or better in these courses. Most concentrations also consider the applicant’s demonstrated ability to learn statistics, as indicated by grades in statistics and mathematics courses.

Minimum: 3.2

Application requirements

Admission to the M.P.H. combination degree program is highly competitive and depends on space availability each cycle. First, complete the Intent to Apply Form, then proceed with completing the remaining application requirements.

Please ask at least two individuals to submit a recommendation form electronically via our Recommendation Portal. One recommendation form must be from a faculty member or course instructor who taught you in any course at UF, and the other can be from a second instructor, advisor, research PI, internship/volunteer supervisor, employer, or similar. Recommendation forms are required; recommendation letters are supplemental and optional.

Submit your complete application after final grades are posted for that term.

Next steps

Within one month of the application deadline, students will receive a decision letter from the M.P.H. program. Students who accept their offer of admission must pick up a combination degree form from the M.P.H. program and return the signed form to their undergraduate advising office for proper filing with the Registrar’s Office. The M.P.H. program manages registration for graduate public health courses each semester.
