Master of Science
Epidemiology
The Master of Science in Epidemiology (M.S.E.) degree is tailored for students aiming for research-focused careers in epidemiology.
Overview
This program is ideal for those pursuing roles in epidemiology research or academic settings. Graduates with an M.S.E. are equipped to join or lead teams conducting epidemiological surveillance and research studies on the occurrence, spread, prevention, and treatment of various conditions and diseases. Students in this program prepare and defend a publishable manuscript (thesis) using rigorous quantitative analysis to earn their degree. Prior coursework in statistics and biology is recommended for admission.
M.S.E. graduates can work in academic, government, or private research settings, and many continue their education at the doctoral level.
The Department of Epidemiology faculty teach courses and advise students in the epidemiology concentration. The curriculum provides hands-on experience, ensuring a strong foundation for those entering the workforce or pursuing a Ph.D. in epidemiology. Courses and other educational experiences are designed to help students develop specific epidemiological skills.
Graduates of the MS in Epidemiology program will be able to:
- Apply surveillance, assessment, evaluation, and other foundational epidemiological research designs to all areas of interest,
- Choose appropriate measurement and analytic methods to study health and disease in a population,
- Utilize biological, behavioral, and social theory to understand how to prevent and intervene to promote public health.
The program consists of the following requirements:
- 36 credits of coursework
- 27 credits of core coursework
- 5 credits of elective coursework
