Undergraduate students in the College of Public Health and Health Professions may petition the college to request an exception to a college policy or regulation. It is recommended that you meet with an advisor to discuss your petition before submitting to ensure a college petition is the appropriate action for your circumstance. You can schedule an advising appointment by following the steps on our advising website.
Petition reasons
The following is a list of reasons a student may wish to submit a petition. Select the type of petition you are submitting for additional information and requirements.
Please note that not all petitions are approved.
Increase maximum credits
Students can register for a maximum of 18 credit hours per semester. Submission of a college petition is required if a student wishes to enroll in more than 18 credit hours in a term. You must demonstrate the need to exceed the maximum credit limit and include a plan for continued success if approved to exceed the maximum credit limit.
Additional drop (current semester only)
Students are permitted two lower division drops (prior to earning 60 credit hours) and two upper division drops (after earning 60 credit hours). This petition must be submitted by the drop deadline for the current semester. Additional drop petitions are not guaranteed to be approved. You should continue to attend and participate in your class(es).
If your additional drop petition is approved, you are still fee liable for the course(s). Contact the Office of Student Financial Affairs to further discuss your financial aid requirements.
The following reasons do not warrant an exception for an additional drop: failing a course, protecting your GPA, failure to attend class, changing your major and no longer needing the course, and time management conflicts with co-curricular activities or work.
Drop/withdraw after the deadline (before the last day of classes)
This petition is available only after the current semester drop deadline through the last day of classes. Semester dates and deadlines can be viewed in the UF Catalog.
Students may petition the college for a drop or full-term withdrawal after the deadline through the last day of classes if they have extenuating circumstances that prevented them from dropping a course before the deadline or have experienced an extenuating circumstance after the drop deadline.
This petition is for the current term only and cannot be used to drop courses from prior semesters.
Waive 30-hour residency requirement
Students must complete the last 30 credit hours applied to their degree at the University of Florida. You can petition to break residence if you have a documentable extenuating circumstance preventing you from completing coursework at UF.
Participation in a UF-approved study abroad or exchange program is not considered a break in residence. If you plan to participate in a UF-approved study abroad or exchange program, you must meet with an academic advisor to ensure that your degree audit accurately reflects this participation.
Concurrent enrollment at UF and another institution – Juniors/Seniors (Fall/Spring only)
Junior or senior students may not be concurrently enrolled at UF and another institution during the Fall or Spring terms. Students can petition this requirement if there are extenuating circumstances that prevent them from taking all coursework at UF.
Graduation extension
PHHP students who enter UF as a freshman (regardless of incoming credits from accelerated mechanisms like dual enrollment or test credit) are expected to graduate in four years (eight fall/spring semesters) if attending UF full-time. Transfer students are expected to graduate in two years (four fall/spring semesters) if attending UF full-time. If you have a documentable extenuating circumstance that will require additional time to complete your degree program, you may petition for a graduation extension.
Examples of extenuating circumstances requiring a graduation extension include a series of approved medical drops, medical withdrawals, or approved reduced course load lower than 12 credit hours for full time status via the UF Disability Resource Center, or personal or financial hardship necessitating ceasing enrollment or enrolling at less than full time status for one or more semesters.
Be aware that the excess hours surcharge may apply depending on your circumstances.
PHHP does not approve graduation extensions for students on academic probation or for students seeking to finish requirements for minors, certificates, or prerequisites for graduate or professional study.
Other – Must meet with an academic advisor
If you wish to petition something not included in the list above, please meet with an academic advisor prior to submitting a petition to ensure that a college petition is appropriate or to receive other recommendations. An academic advisor will provide guidance on the information you must provide before submitting a petition.
Petition requirements
Your petition submission must include the following:
- A detailed personal statement explaining why you are requesting an exception to college regulations.
