Colectivo Collaboratory

Collaborative Research for Community Impact

About the lab

The COLECTIVO Collaboratory, led by Dr. Jose Colon-Burgos, is a dynamic and inclusive research space focused on advancing health equity through community-engaged qualitative and quantitative research. We work alongside students, faculty, staff and community members to address pressing social, environmental and health issues. Whether you are interested in joining a current study or launching your own project using existing or new data, the lab offers a welcoming environment for learning, collaboration and impact.

Current project

Our flagship project focuses on developing a culturally responsive program for stimulant-using men at high risk of HIV. The goal is to reduce substance use and increase PrEP uptake in order to prevent HIV and support holistic well-being. The work is ongoing, and students joining in Fall 2026 will step into active analysis and intervention development.

The process includes:

  • Conducting in-depth interviews that explore participants’ knowledge, cultural beliefs, and attitudes related to HIV, PrEP, and substance use
  • Transcribing interviews and applying both inductive and deductive coding
  • Developing a comprehensive codebook and identifying key themes
  • Translating findings into a tailored intervention that meets the cultural and social needs of the community
