Developments related to scientific and public health aspects of infectious diseases
CSQUID conducts research on prevention and intervention in infectious diseases of global health importance.
About us
The mission of CSQUID is to provide for the statistical and mathematical analysis of infectious disease transmission and control, with primary focus on vaccines. The Center is based in the College of Public Health and Health Professions and the Emerging Pathogens Institute (EPI) at the University of Florida. The research and training involve statistical and mathematical models for infectious disease transmission, pathogenesis, evolution, immunology, and interventions in communities. Among the infectious disease threats under research are COVID-19, pandemic and season influenza, dengue, Chikungunya, Zika, malaria, mpox, Ebola, Lassa fever, and others.
The work at CSQUID is tightly linked other with centers including the Emerging Pathogens Institute at UF, the World Health Organization R&D Blueprint for Global Infectious Disease Threats in Geneva, Switzerland, the Center for Advanced Epidemic Analytics and Predictive Modeling Technology (EPISTORM) at Northeastern University in Boston, and the Center for Health Emergencies, Bruno Kesler Foundation in Trento, Italy. We regularly share resources and research with these other centers and closely collaborate.
The Center faculty teach three important infectious disease statistical and mathematical modeling courses at UF:
- Analytic Methods for Infectious Diseases
- Infectious Disease Data Analysis
- Stochastic Processes with Epidemic Theory
Dr. Longini has co-taught a course entitled “Stochastic Models with Inference” since 2009 in the Summer Institutes in Statistics and Modeling in Infectious Diseases (SISMID).

Affiliated centers and institutions
Emerging Pathogens Institute
The University of Florida Emerging Pathogens Institute, founded in 2006, is dedicated to advancing interdisciplinary research on the emergence and control of human, animal and plant pathogens that impact Florida, the nation and the globe.
Center for Advanced Epidemic Analytics and Predictive Modeling Technology
Epistorm is an innovation center of InsightNet, the national network for outbreak and disease modeling established by the CDC’s Center for Forecasting & Outbreak Analytics (CFA)
Health Emergency Program, Bruno Kessler Foundation
Trento, Italy
By combining knowledge of the epidemiology of infectious diseases and mathematical and computational modeling, the Health Emergencies Center develops quantitative epidemiology methods to strengthen epidemiological surveillance in three stages: systematic collection of relevant data (health and other); data analysis and synthesis; dissemination of results.
Summer Institutes in Statistics and Modeling in Infectious Diseases (SISMID)
The Summer Institute in Statistics and Modeling in Infectious Diseases (SISMID) is designed to introduce infectious disease researchers to modern methods of statistical analysis and mathematical modeling.
WHO R&D Blueprint for Epidemics
The World Health Organization R&D Blueprint for Epidemics has a primary goal to accelerate the development of medical countermeasures (MCMs).
Software
TranStat
An analytic tool (TranStat) is available to analyze data from outbreaks of acute infectious disease to test for the presence of human-to-human transmission (or animal-to-animal in veterinary settings) and to estimate epidemiologic characteristics of the disease.
Recent news
College news
Targeted indoor spraying reduces community risk of mosquito-borne viruses
Spraying insecticide on the household surfaces where mosquitoes that carry chikungunya, dengue and Zika rest after feeding led to a 24% reduction of those illnesses among community members, according to a new study published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
College news
New studies demonstrate major progress in containing Ebola outbreaks
Scientists report continued success in containing or controlling Ebola outbreaks, which continue to pop up regularly in sub-Saharan Africa.
