Title: Controlled Substance Regulation and Public Health: The Case of Cannabis
Description: Cannabis, or marijuana, is a frequently used substance in the United States. Federally, cannabis is in classification transition from a Schedule I controlled substance. In this talk, I examine how the complicated web of federal and state regulations for cannabis product production, distribution, and use, have impacted cannabis access and our ability to measure use. I will explore, through a legal epidemiology framework, how cannabis regulation as a controlled substance influences our understanding of cannabis effects on individual health, and how, ultimately, cannabis effects public health. Last, I look ahead toward implications for research that consider regulatory changes on the horizon and propose goals for improving the rigor of our research on the effects of cannabis on public health.
