The College of Public Health and Health Professions is pleased to offer undergraduate students across campus the opportunity to pursue an American Sign Language and Deaf Culture certificate. The certificate requires 14 credits and is comprised of four courses. The American Sign Language and Deaf Culture certificate provides fundamental skills in American Sign Language (ASL) and Deaf Culture to prepare for careers in sign language interpreting.
Eligibility requirements
- Students must be at junior or senior level standing (60+ credits earned) and have credit for STA2023 or an approved equivalent.
- Students must be current University of Florida degree-seeking undergraduate students; non-degree seeking or graduate students are not eligible.
Required courses
- ASL1110 American Sign Language 1 (4 credits)
- ASL1120 American Sign Language 2 (4 credits)
- ASL1130 American Sign Language 3 (3 credits)
- SPA3475 Deaf Culture in America (3 credits)
How to apply
To apply for the American Sign Language and Deaf Culture certificate, please submit the required certificate application. Select “Currently Enrolled App” to complete the required application.
Please note: students pursuing the Deaf and Hearing Sciences minor are not eligible to pursue the American Sign Language and Deaf Culture certificate. Students may pursue the minor or the certificate but not both.
