NIDA T32 Training Program
NIDA T32 Training Program DIS+SAM NIDA T32 Training Program University of Florida Substance Abuse Training Center in Public Health

The Department of Epidemiology at the University of Florida (UF) announces a NIDA Substance Abuse Training Center in Public Health. The T32 training program, directed by Linda B. Cottler, will support five pre-docs and three post-docs each year.

The justification for the T32 is:

  • Increased health disparities related to the harmful consequences of drug use
  • A significant shortage of scientists in the drug abuse field
  • Our strong academic and research environment at UF, which is ripe for producing public health oriented scientists and clinicians
  • The underrepresentation of NIDA and other NIH T32 training programs in the southeast region of the US
  • A strong and enthusiastic group of mentors who have an excellent track record to train nationally and internationally prominent substance abuse researchers
  • The commitment of the state and UF’s President to be a top public university, which brings additional resources for research

The core innovative aspect of this new public health oriented T32 is the focus on the epidemiology and prevention of substance use and its consequences and co-morbidities, with a focus on social determinants of health and health inequalities, and the development of behavioral interventions to reduce substance use and its harmful consequences. The training program is crafted with a clear application to practice and public health both domestically and internationally.

The program will:

  • Train talented individuals to independently work from the individual level (behavioral interventions) to the population level (exposure and consequences of addiction) to eliminate health inequalities related to substance use and its consequences
  • Provide trainees with an apprenticeship style education to master skills to critically evaluate data, conduct multiple aspects of addiction research and become successful, and independent investigators who contribute to the field
  • Train individuals to understand, apply and maintain the highest ethical standards in their science and scholarship as socially responsible investigators

The program is co-directed by Sara Jo Nixon, Professor and Co-Vice Chair of Psychiatry.

Linda B. Cottler, PhD, MPH, FACE, is a Professor of Epidemiology at the College of Public Health and Health Professions and the College of Medicine (2011-present) and former Senior Associate Dean for Research at the College of Public Health and Health Professions (2012-2022) at the University of Florida. Before moving to UF to become Founding Chair of the Department of Epidemiology (2011-2018), Dr. Cottler was at Washington University for 30 years, where she earned her PhD and developed a robust research program in addiction and community engagement science. She has been continuously funded by NIDA since 1989 and has received numerous contracts and grants from multiple Institutes. This research includes: development of culturally reliable and valid measures for identifying substance use, abuse and dependence, along with psychiatric disorders and their risk factors; innovative methods for conducting national surveys of high risk behaviors; and community based, peer-delivered interventions to change high risk behaviors and substance abuse. Her work has had international focus as well, extending to Afghanistan, Australia, Haiti, India, Kenya, Taiwan, and Thailand.

Dr. Cottler’s research has also focused on populations underrepresented in the research enterprise to increase health equity. She is Founding Director of HealthStreet (1989)—a community engagement program of the UF CTSA in which Community Health Workers assess health concerns and needs of community members and provide referrals to medical and social services and opportunities to participate in research. Cottler is Director of the Community Engagement for the UF Clinical and Translational Science Institute. She also serves on the Board of Directors of the Association for Clinical and Translational Science (President 2022 to 2024), and is Co-Chair of the Special Interest Group PACER (Partners for the Advancement of Community Engaged Research).

Dr. Cottler has had the privilege to be mentored by Dennis Slone and Allen Mitchell in Boston, as well as Lee Robins in St. Louis, where she coordinated the landmark Epidemiologic Catchment Area Program. She has been PI of numerous intervention studies to reduce high risk behaviors, the NFL study of retired players, and NMAPSS and SNAPS, to understand stimulant use among 10 to 17 year olds. She directs the NDEWS and PANDEMIC initiatives, and co-directs ABCD and All of Us initiatives, among others. The highlight of her career has been working with the many talented and diverse mentees as part of her funded training programs, especially the NIDA T32 and Fogarty International Center Training Grants. Cottler has published over 360 manuscripts and chapters and been the recipient of numerous awards for her mentoring and research achievements including the Marian Fischman and Rema Lapouse Awards.

Dr. Nixon is a Distinguished Professor of Psychiatry and Psychology, Chief of Addiction Research, Director of the Biobehavioral Core of the University of Florida Clinical and Translational Science Institute, and Director of the Neurocognitive Laboratory in the UF Department of Psychiatry. She is an experienced clinical researcher in the area of substance abuse and dependence.

Because of the complex nature of substance abuse, her work uses comprehensive behavioral assessments including neuropsychological testing, brain electrophysiology (electroencephalography and event-related potentials), and clinical research interviews. This work has provided many opportunities for Dr. Nixon to provide training to graduate students and post-doctoral associates.

In addition to neurobehavioral research, Dr. Nixon has sustained a strong interest in community outreach and education. During her tenure in Oklahoma, she was instrumental in the development and implementation of the Oscar A. Parsons Summer Institute which engaged experts from across the country in the provision of education and training programs for community service providers and she was a key component (with Dr. Deborah Jones-Saumty) in the American Indian Research Group of Oklahoma which fostered substance-related research initiatives among the non-reservation residing tribes in the state. Following the Oklahoma City Bombing (1995), she diverted a portion of her efforts to another concern; the psychiatric impact of the tragedy on the community and emergency responders. Her continued commitment to community outreach is reflected in her on-going work focusing on the cognitive, psychological and social concomitants of substance use and her participation in a variety of workshops, seminars, committees and councils.

Dr. Nixon has authored over 110 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters as well as edited two books. She has made over 200 scientific presentations and held grants and awards from a variety of private, state and national sources including the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), and more. She is completing her tenure as the Immediate Past President of the Research Society on Alcoholism. Within the American Psychological Association, Dr. Nixon is a Fellow in both Divisions 28 (Substance Use and Psychopharmacology) and 50 (Addiction) of the American Psychological Association. She served as the Member-at-large for Division 50 from 2006-2009.

Research Summary:

Dr. Nixon uses neurobehavioral methods and models to examine the acute and chronic effects of alcohol and other drugs. Within her clinical research, her team also explores sex differences, the effects of age, and the import of ethnic/racial minority status.

Because of the complex nature of substance abuse, Dr. Nixon’s work uses comprehensive behavioral assessments including neuropsychological testing, brain electrophysiology (electroencephalography and event-related potentials), and clinical research interviews. In addition to neurobehavioral research, Dr. Nixon has sustained a strong interest in community outreach and education. Her continued commitment to community outreach is reflected in her on-going work focusing on the cognitive, psychological and social concomitants of substance use.

Another study in her laboratory includes analysis of a recently completed study funded by the NIAAA exploring the acute effects of alcohol in healthy older (55-70) and younger social drinkers. Although recruitment for this study has concluded, several key issues including the analysis of sex differences and driving performance under different conditions remain to be examined.

In addition to these efforts, her team is involved in the conduct of a pilot study designed to assess the feasibility and efficacy of an FDA approved medication on cognition and abstinence in small group of men and women seeking treatment for alcohol use disorders. In the near future, we anticipate initiating a Phase 2 trial that will examine the impact of a new compound on smoking cessation efforts in a sample of healthy current smokers.
