The Department of Biostatistics is dedicated to training statistical scientists who will succeed in academia as researchers and teachers or in industry as professional biostatisticians. The department’s programs and courses are also designed to give investigators in medical and public health professions a solid foundation in biostatistics that will help them conduct research in their areas of expertise.
Graduate programs
Our graduate students take a variety of courses in statistics and public health offered through the Department of Biostatistics and through the Department of Statistics in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The Department of Biostatistics offers three degree programs as well as a undergraduate certificate, and instructs students in the Master of Public Health program’s biostatistics concentration.
Biostatistics, PhD
A terminal degree for students pursuing academic and research careers.
Master of Science in Biostatistics
Our two-year on-campus degree program is designed for students interested in biostatistics practice or going on to a Ph.D. program. We also offer an online format designed mainly for working professionals and post-undergraduate students who are not able to attend campus courses. Additionally, current UF undergraduate students may qualify for the combination degree program which allows students to earn a bachelor’s degree from any degree program at UF and a Master of Science degree in Biostatistics with 12 credit hours of graduate coursework counting toward both degrees.
Master of Pubic Health, Biostatistics concentration
The biostatistics concentration is a campus-only program, designed primarily for students with a previous undergraduate degree, particularly in the sciences, health or otherwise, who want to obtain a solid background in quantitative and analytical methods for public health research.

Rather than a purely technical deep-dive, this certificate emphasizes the collaborative, interdisciplinary nature of biostatistics work, where statisticians partner with clinicians, epidemiologists, and public health researchers to answer questions that affect real lives.

About our faculty
Our faculty members collaborate extensively with investigators in the College of Medicine, the College of Public Health and Health Professions and the other colleges of UF’s Health Science Center, as well as with the Clinical and Translational Science Institute, the Emerging Pathogens Institute, the UF Shands Cancer Center, the McKnight Brain Institute and other organizations across UF and worldwide. Well-funded by numerous sponsors, such as the National Institutes of Health, the National Children’s Cancer Foundation and the Department of Veterans Affairs, biostatistics faculty are performing critical scientific investigations that offer many opportunities for students in the department’s M.P.H., M.S., and Ph.D. programs.
