Meet: Pravalika Manda
Program: Master of Public Health, biostatistics concentration
Hometown: Gainesville, Florida
Educational background: Bachelor of Science โ Microbiology and Cell Sciences
Why did you decide to join your program?
I decided to pursue an M.P.H. because of my academic background in microbiology and my experience in oncology and clinical trials. These experiences sparked my interest in understanding health beyond individual patient care. Working in oncology research has given me firsthand exposure to the importance of evidence-based medicine and the role that research plays in improving patient outcomes. While this experience strengthened my understanding of clinical research, it also highlighted the need to view health challenges from a broader population perspective. I also wanted to strengthen my knowledge of biostatistics so I can use real-world data to solve public health problems. I hope to use the skills I gain through the MPH program to better analyze health data, design impactful studies, and translate research findings into public health interventions.
What have been some of your favorite moments in your program, or what are you most looking forward to?
Iโm looking forward to strengthening my skills in biostatistics and epidemiology and learning how to apply them to real-world public health challenges. Iโm excited to collaborate with classmates from diverse backgrounds and gain different perspectives on addressing complex health issues. I also look forward to opportunities for research, community engagement and applying what I learn to improve health outcomes for vulnerable populations. By combining my background in microbiology and oncology research with a public health and biostatistics lens, I hope to contribute to the development of policies and interventions that reduce health disparities and promote equitable access to quality healthcare.
What do you plan to do with your degree?
I plan to use my M.P.H. to build a career in oncology, where I can combine my background in clinical research with public health and biostatistics. I’m particularly interested in using data-driven approaches, including artificial intelligence, to improve cancer research, clinical decision-making and patient outcomes. Ultimately, I hope to help develop innovative, data-driven solutions that improve oncologic care and reduce disparities amongst vulnerable populations.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
In my spare time, I love to visit local coffee shops, restaurants and farmers markets. I am also a big sports fan and enjoy Gator tailgates, football games and basketball games. I am also a fan of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Aside from that, I love to travel!
What would you like to share with others who may be considering the same program?
I think the M.P.H. program is a great choice for anyone given its interdisciplinary nature! It provides valuable skills in epidemiology, biostatistics, health policy and research that can be applied across many fields. The program also offers opportunities to collaborate with professionals from diverse backgrounds and gain a deeper understanding of the factors that influence health beyond patient care. It opens the door to a wide range of career opportunities while making a difference on the lives of others.
