Meet the students from the College of Public Health and Health Professions, a diverse group dedicated to improving health and well-being in communities around the world. These students come from various backgrounds, united by their passion for health and their commitment to making a positive impact. They bring unique perspectives and experiences to their studies, preparing to become the next generation of health professionals who will address pressing health challenges and advance their field.

Meet: Popy Khatun
Program: Ph.D. in Public Health, Environmental Health concentration
Hometown: Sirajganj, Bangladesh
Educational background: Master of Science — Pharmacology, Bangladesh Agricultural University; Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, Bangladesh Agricultural University
Why did you decide to join your program?
I decided to join the program because it aligns closely with my research interests and long-term career goals. I wanted to expand my knowledge by integrating computational methods within a One Health framework. I am also drawn to the research of my principal investigator, Dr. Zhoumeng Lin, which focuses on developing computational models for nanomedicine, animal-derived food safety and human health risk assessment. This program will allow me to learn advanced computational modeling, collaborate with experienced researchers and apply these approaches to address environmental health challenges and improve public health.
What have been some of your favorite moments in your program, or what are you most looking forward to?
Since I will begin the program in Spring 2027, I am most looking forward to joining my principal investigator’s research group, collaborating with students and faculty from diverse backgrounds, and learning advanced computational and experimental techniques. I am also excited to become part of the UF community, attend seminars and conferences, and experience campus life while building lasting friendships.
What do you plan to do with your degree?
My long-term goal is to become a faculty member and establish a research laboratory focused on computational modeling of environmental contaminants, food safety and One Health. I hope to contribute to the scientific community through high-quality research, teaching and mentorship while developing evidence-based strategies to reduce chemical risks and protect public health.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
In my free time, I enjoy listening to music while taking walks in my yard. I also enjoy watching movies, especially science fiction, comedy and thriller films. I like trying new recipes, although I’m still learning and don’t consider myself a great cook. Most importantly, I enjoy spending quality time with my friends and family, which helps me relax and maintain a healthy work-life balance.
What would you like to share with others who may be considering the same program?
Although I have not started the program yet, my interactions with the faculty, staff and students have been very positive. Everyone has been welcoming, supportive and willing to help. If you are considering this program, I encourage you to be curious, proactive and open to new learning opportunities.
Is there anything else you would like to share?
Be optimistic and believe in yourself. Create your own path rather than simply following others. Every journey is unique, and the challenges you overcome will shape you into a stronger and more resilient person.
