They bring unique perspectives and experiences to their studies, preparing to become the next generation of health professionals who will address pressing health challenges and advance their field.
Meet: Abrianna Chung
Program: Master of Health Science in Environmental and Global Health — One Health
Hometown: St. Elizabeth, Jamaica
Educational background: Bachelor of Arts — Anthropology, University of Florida
Why did you decide to join your program?
I decided to pursue a Master of Health Science in Environmental and Global Health with a concentration in One Health because I am passionate about understanding the complex factors that influence health on both local and global scales. During my undergraduate studies in anthropology, particularly through my medical anthropology coursework, I began to see health in a new light. I realized that health outcomes are shaped not only by biology, but also by cultural, environmental, social and political factors. This interdisciplinary perspective naturally led me to the One Health approach, which recognizes the interconnectedness of human, animal and environmental health.
My study abroad experience in Greece further solidified my interest in One Health by allowing me to observe global health challenges firsthand and understand the importance of collaborative, cross-disciplinary solutions. I expect to graduate in 2028 and look forward to expanding my knowledge and skills in public health and epidemiology.
What have been some of your favorite moments in your program?
Although I am just beginning the M.H.S. One Health program, some of my favorite moments leading up to the program include my One Health study abroad experience in Greece and the mentorship I received from Dr. Michael von Fricken. Through this experience, I was able to see firsthand how human, animal and environmental health intersect in real-world settings. The experience broadened my perspective on global health and reinforced my decision to pursue graduate studies in One Health.
What do you plan to do with your degree?
I plan to pursue a career in public health and epidemiology, focusing on global health and infectious disease prevention. I also intend to continue my education and eventually attend medical school. My goal is to integrate perspectives from anthropology, public health and medicine to address health disparities and improve healthcare outcomes for diverse populations.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
In my spare time, I enjoy playing video games, traveling and spending time with family and friends. I particularly enjoy simulation and strategy games because they allow me to be creative, solve problems and think critically. I also enjoy exploring different cultures through travel and new experiences.
What would you like to share with others who may be considering the same program?
I would encourage anyone considering the One Health program to embrace interdisciplinary learning and remain open to new perspectives. One Health addresses some of the world’s most pressing health challenges by bringing together knowledge from multiple fields. Students from diverse academic backgrounds, including the social sciences, can make valuable contributions to the field.
Is there anything else you would like to share?
As an immigrant and first-generation college student, my educational journey has not always been straightforward. However, these experiences have strengthened my resilience and deepened my commitment to improving health outcomes for underserved communities. I am excited to begin the M.H.S. One Health program and contribute to the collaborative and interdisciplinary environment within PHHP.
