Meet: Phoebe Hecker

Program: Doctor of Occupational Therapy

Hometown: Pompano Beach, Florida

Educational background: Bachelor of Science, Florida State University

Why did you decide to join your program?

I chose to pursue my Doctorate in Occupational Therapy because I have always been passionate about helping others, especially those who cannot advocate for themselves. Occupational therapy empowers individuals to regain independence in ways that are meaningful and tailored to their unique needs and not only for the expectations of society.

What have been some of your favorite moments in your program?

Some of my favorite moments in the program have been learning about the many interventions that can be tailored to each individual. I’ve especially enjoyed seeing how two clients with the same diagnosis can still have very different needs, and how important it is to problem solve and stay proactive to support each person fully. These experiences have shown me how meaningful personalized care can be and have strengthened my appreciation for the role we play within the interdisciplinary team. I’ve also loved being involved with Hands to Love, a nonprofit service organization that supports children with upper limb differences. My time with this group has been incredibly inspiring and has deepened my passion for occupational therapy and advocacy.

What do you plan to do with your degree?

At this point, I’m keeping my options open and have genuinely enjoyed every setting I’ve observed. However, I am leaning toward working in a hospital environment, where I can experience a wide variety of cases and be an active part of the medical team.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I love spending time outdoors in my spare time. Whether I’m working out, hiking, swimming, reading, listening to a podcast, or spending quality time with friends and family, being outside always makes me feel grounded. I also enjoy traveling and exploring new places, which lets me combine my love for adventure with my appreciation for the outdoors.

What would you like to share with others who may be considering the same program?

This program offers experiences and opportunities I never would have expected to be related to occupational therapy. I’m constantly learning and each new experience makes me rethink which setting I want to pursue. The incredible opportunities, along with professors who encourage us to stay open-minded, have made a huge impact on me. Every professor is very passionate about OT and their enthusiasm makes me excited for what lies ahead in my career as an OT.

Is there anything else you would like to share?

Even if you don’t choose UF for your OT program, I’m just glad you are seeking interest in becoming an occupational therapist. I can’t wait to support you on this journey and hopefully call you a future colleague!
