Meet: Julia Bartel
Program: Ph.D. in Public Health, One Health concentration
Hometown: Bowie, Maryland
Educational background: B.S. in Pre-Vet, with a minor in Chemistry; M.S. in Medical Microbiology and Cell Science
Why did you decide to join your program?
I have always had a deep passion for the environment, animals and people. Growing up with horses and surrounded by farmers, I witnessed firsthand the devastating effects that infectious diseases and environmental toxins can have on crops, animals and the communities that depend on them. My love for science has always been strong, but I knew I wanted a career that would allow me to make a direct and meaningful impact.
Traveling to several developing countries further shaped my perspective. Recognizing the impact of limited resources on public and environmental health underscored the urgent need for integrated, sustainable solutions. During my master’s program, I took several One Health–focused courses and immediately recognized that this interdisciplinary approach aligned with both my experiences and my values.
I have always enjoyed detective work, problem-solving, and understanding the “why” behind complex issues. Epidemiology brings together these interests with my scientific background, making it a field I am truly passionate about pursuing. Additionally, my experience as a hazardous waste and lab manager, as well as a food and class II device operational inspector, has strengthened my attention to detail and sparked my interest in risk assessment. Colleagues who have worked closely with me often comment that I would excel in this area.
I am confident that, through my thesis work and continued studies, I will refine and solidify my professional path. Whether in epidemiology, risk assessment or another One Health–aligned role, I am committed to contributing to healthier environments, animals and communities.

What have been some of your favorite moments in your program?
As a first-year student, I am aware that my understanding of this field will continue to grow. For now, I’ve learned how important it is to pay attention to the ingredients in the foods our animals and we eat, to ensure access to safe drinking water, and to protect the air we breathe. Gaining this knowledge has shown me just how much change is needed to make our world a healthier, safer place.
What do you plan to do with your degree?
Epidemiologist or Risk Assessment Manager.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
Horseback riding instructor, horse breeder (foals and stallions), young horse training and development, equine importation, scuba diving, snow skiing, kayaking, hiking, biking, watching movies, and spending time with my four cats — and yes! It is hard to find the time.
What would you like to share with others who may be considering the same program?
If you want to make a solid impact on the world and contribute to society, One Health is an excellent program.
Is there anything else you would like to share?
Looking forward to my journey as a Ph.D. student and the career that follows.
