Meet: Antwan Brinson

Program: Ph.D. in Public Health, Social and Behavioral Sciences concentration

Educational background: Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and a minor in Family Youth and Community Sciences, Master of Science in Health Education and Behavior, Master of Public Health

Why did you decide to join your program?

As someone deeply committed to addressing HIV and cancer health disparities, I chose to pursue a Ph.D. to contribute to the advancement of research that prioritizes marginalized and hard-to-reach communities. These populations continue to experience disproportionately high rates of HIV and HPV-related cancers, yet remain underrepresented in scientific inquiry. Through advanced training and community-engaged research, I aim to develop equitable strategies that improve prevention, access to care and long-term health outcomes for those most impacted.

What have been some of your favorite moments in your program?

Beyond the research itself, I have found that the most memorable parts of my program come from moments of connection and discovery. Choosing a dissertation topic I genuinely care about reminded me why I entered this field, and forming close bonds with my cohort has made the journey more collaborative and inspiring. I find myself happy when I can immerse myself in data that reflects the communities I hope to serve, learning their stories in ways that strengthen both my research and my commitment to advancing health equity.

What do you plan to do with your degree?

After graduation, I plan to continue advancing my research at the intersection of HIV and HPV-related cancers, while also expanding my work as a mental health advocate and researcher. I intend to pursue a postdoctoral associate position that will allow me to deepen my expertise, strengthen my publication record, and build a focused research agenda. After completing a postdoctoral associate role, I plan to transition to a tenure-track assistant professor position, where I can continue developing impactful research while educating and mentoring the next generation of public health professionals.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

Play with my dogs, read, relax, go to the gym or sleep.

What would you like to share with others who may be considering the same program?

As with any journey in life, pursuing a Ph.D. comes with its share of trials and challenges. However, when you identify your passion, clarify your purpose and stay true to your values, you unlock a capacity for growth and accomplishment that far exceeds any expectation you or others may have. It is through this alignment of conviction and perseverance that the most profound personal and professional milestones are achieved.
