Meet: Ana Batista

Program: Doctor of Occupational Therapy

Hometown: Plantation, Florida

Educational background: Bachelor of Exercise Science

Why did you decide to join your program?

I was drawn to this program because of its well rounded approach to occupational therapy education. The curriculum is intentionally balanced, allowing students to gain meaningful experience in a wide range of practice areas. I felt this would prepare me to enter the field with a strong, holistic foundation.

What have been some of your favorite moments in your program?

Some of my favorite moments in the program have been the hands-on learning experiences. I’ve especially appreciated the opportunity to work in the cadaver lab because it provides such a powerful, real-world understanding of the human body. I’ve also enjoyed learning practical skills like creating splints, which has helped me connect classroom concepts to actual clinical practice.

Another highlight has been the support and dedication of the faculty. They continuously look for the best ways to help us succeed and put thoughtful effort into using diverse teaching approaches that meet the needs of different learning styles. Their commitment makes the learning environment both encouraging and engaging.

What do you plan to do with your degree?

I plan to specialize in hand therapy and work toward becoming a Certified Hand Therapist (CHT). I’m excited to support future clients through their rehabilitation journeys and help them regain function and independence in their everyday lives.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my husband and our dog. I also love sewing, baking, exploring nature, reading and staying active.

What would you like to share with others who may be considering the same program?

Get ready to challenge yourself in the best way and to discover just how wide and meaningful the world of occupational therapy truly is. The UF OTD program offers a rigorous, well-rounded education that genuinely prepares you to become a confident and compassionate clinician. You’ll grow more than you ever expected, build strong lifelong friendships, and feel supported every step of the way. It’s a transformative experience that will shape you into an exceptional OT, both personally and professionally.

Is there anything else you would like to share?

I’d like to highlight how meaningful the unique learning opportunities have been, especially the hands-on labs, collaborative projects and real world experiences. These moments have solidified my love for OT and have given me confidence as I step into the field.

For anyone considering this program, I’d share that it’s absolutely worth the commitment. It will challenge you, support you and grow you in ways you don’t expect. If you come in with an open mind and a willing heart, you’ll thrive.
