Mary Starkey-Smith was recognized for her exemplary work at an awards ceremony held during the UF College of Public Health and Health Professions’ annual holiday breakfast on December 4.

In presenting the award Dean Beth A. Virnig, Ph.D., M.P.H., acknowledged a common theme in the nomination letters written by Starkey-Smith’s co-workers.

“One word surfaces again and again in the letters: compassion,” Virnig said.

Virnig commended Starkey-Smith’s organization, attention to detail and creative approach to solving problems.

“She is the person who keeps the college moving forward because she doesn’t let things slip through the cracks and she manages to do it while smiling,” Virnig said.

Starkey-Smith joined PHHP in September 2023 as executive assistant to Dean Beth Virnig. In addition to assisting the dean, Starkey-Smith regularly write letters of support on behalf of the dean for grant applications and promotion packets, resulting in both a high rate of promotion and tenure for PHHP faculty and success in funding research.

She also develops presentations on behalf of the dean used at college events and professional conferences, communicating complex ideas and sharing the vision and values of PHHP with a wide audience.

In letters of support for her Employee of the Year nomination, Starkey-Smith’s colleagues praised her ability to address challenges before they arise and willingness to go above and beyond to support college leadership, faculty and staff. They also celebrated her positivity and collaborative spirit.

“Beyond her technical skills, she elevates the workplace through her remarkable interpersonal skills: communicating with clarity and kindness, fostering a positive culture and supporting colleagues with genuine warmth,” one letter read. “Mary leads by example, setting the standard for excellence, reliability and compassion across the college. Her contributions strengthen both daily operations and the broader sense of community within PHHP.”

“She embodies the kind of integrity and compassion that all of us should aspire to,” read another. “If someone were to ask me what the best version of a college employee looks like, I would describe Mary.”
