Program: Ph.D. in Public Health, Social and Behavioral Sciences concentration

Educational background: Master of Public Health

Why did you decide to join your program?

After completing my Master of Public Health, I knew I wanted to pursue a Ph.D. as well eventually. I spent a few years working at my hometown’s health department, and then I started looking at Ph.D. programs. I have always been fascinated by human behavior and I was thrilled that UF’s Public Health Ph.D. program offered a concentration (Social and Behavioral Sciences) that aligned perfectly with my interests!

What have been some of your favorite moments in your program?

Taking Dr. George Hack’s “College Classroom: Teaching Process and Practice” course inspired me to create and teach my own college class! I designed and taught “Essentials of Empathy: Building Emotional Intelligence in Health Professions” in the UF Honors college. I absolutely loved working with my students and seeing them grow throughout the course!

What do you plan to do with your degree?

I plan to continue pursuing my passion for both teaching and conducting research! My research interests specifically focus on mental health, artificial intelligence and social and behavioral change strategies.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I have been doing Zumba for the last decade and still keep at it with the busy Ph.D. life! I also have a yellow labrador retriever who keeps me entertained. I will occasionally do a little stress baking too; my last one was Ghirardelli brownies!

What would you like to share with others who may be considering the same program?

This program has helped me grow not only academically, but personally as well. The faculty and fellow students are incredibly supportive, and the community here is amazing. Never hesitate to ask for help, there are so many people ready to support you throughout the journey!
