Why did you choose the Epidemiology, PhD at UF?
I joined the University of Florida’s MD-PhD program in July 2020, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. At the time, my interests were rooted in microbiology, which I studied as an undergraduate. However, through early coursework and conversations with faculty during my first two years of medical school, I became increasingly interested in how diseases affect different populations and the role of the immune system not just in fighting infections but also in conditions such as cancer.
I ultimately chose UF’s epidemiology Ph.D. program because it aligned with my growing interests in population science, cancer epidemiology and health disparities.
What have been some of your favorite moments in the program?
Some of my favorite moments in the program have been collaborating with colleagues on class projects that led to published work. I’ve especially enjoyed pursuing my concentrations in cancer epidemiology and clinical and translational science. A highlight was participating in the TL1 grant program, which pairs public health students with students from other colleges to complete an interdisciplinary research project—a great opportunity for team science.
Attending national research conferences in cities including Las Vegas and Washington has also been meaningful. Not only did I have the chance to present my work and meet like-minded students, but I also had the unique experience of lobbying for NIH funding on Capitol Hill.
What do you plan to do with your degree?
I plan to become a physician-scientist who conducts clinical and epidemiologic research to advance equitable health outcomes for all patients. Through the skills and knowledge gained in the epidemiology program, I hope to contribute meaningfully to cancer prevention research and promote public health education through media and community outreach.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
In my spare time, I enjoy watching and participating in the performing arts, such as acting and singing. I also like to travel and try food from different cultures.
What would you like to share with others who may be considering the Epidemiology, PhD program?
The UF epidemiology program offers a wide range of classes, concentrations and hands-on opportunities that build strong skills in study design and data analysis. Most important, it prepares you to become a confident and independent researcher.
