They bring unique perspectives and experiences to their studies, preparing to become the next generation of health professionals who will address pressing health challenges and advance their field.

Meet: Nora Cleary

Program: Public Health, Ph.D., One Health concentration

Educational Background: 

  • Bachelor of Science in Molecular Genetics with a minor in Microbiology
  • Master of Public Health in Epidemiology and Global Health

What are your research interests?

  • Zoonotic diseases
  • Enteric diseases
  • Genetic epidemiology 

Why did you choose the University of Florida?

The University of Florida has numerous collaborative research opportunities and a wide variety of courses to expand my knowledge about infectious diseases from a global health perspective. 

What research experience do you have?

  • Geocoding and mapping data from a Sero epidemiological typhoid study in
Asia 
  • Systematic literature review about ticks and tick-borne diseases in Asia and Europe 
  • Whole genome sequencing of
Hepatitis A using the Thermofisher
Ion Torrent System 
  • Descriptive analysis of the impact of the COVID-19 response on enteric diseases in Colorado

What philosophy guides you in your education?

We can learn as much from our failures than we can from our successes. 

If you could solve one environmental or global health problem, what would it be?

I would solve food insecurity.

What are your career goals?

I am interested in working internationally with vector-borne diseases or participating in the Epidemic Intelligence Service.
