What are your research interests?
I am passionate about infectious diseases and those with epidemic potential, including water-borne diseases such as cholera and malaria in humanitarian contexts. My focus is on vulnerable groups, displaced populations and children. I also have an interest in Ebola viral disease, COVID-19, sexual and reproductive health and HIV/AIDS.
Why did you choose the University of Florida?
I chose University of Florida mainly because of the quality of its public health research and the opportunity to perform interdisciplinary research alongside experienced researchers in well-established institutes and laboratories, both in the U.S. and abroad. My choice was also influenced by the notoriety of the University and the impact a degree from UF could have on my career. Finally, the location of the University in Florida played a part, as the weather is said to be among the coolest of the country.
What research experience do you have?
During the Eastern Congo Ebola viral disease outbreak, I was the leading researcher for the Butembo Sub-Coordination. I was directly involved in more than 50 research themes. From the end of the Eastern Congo Ebola viral disease outbreak until now, I have been directly involved in operational research on COVID-19 and Ebola viral disease in Equateur province. (Mbandaka).
What philosophy guides you in your education?
Every time I acquire a knowledge or skill, I immediately think about how helpful it will be for the people around me.
If you could solve one environmental or global health problem, what would it be?
I would like to contribute to the elimination of cholera and malaria in the world’s most affected areas by better understanding how the causal pathogens and vectors adapt to their changing environment.
What are your career goals?
In the near future, after completing this program, I plan to lead interdisciplinary research teams, help strengthen disease control programs worldwide by translating research findings into effective action and help train researchers.
