Robert Cook, M.D., M.P.H., a professor in the Department of Epidemiology in the University of Florida College of Public Health and Health Professions, served as a visiting professor at the Federal University of Goiás in Goiás, Brazil, in May.

During his week-long visiting professorship at the university’s Institute of Tropical Pathology and Public Health, Cook toured campus research labs, met with fellow scientists and educators and gave a talk as part of the university’s BrainStorm Science lecture series. Cook, the director of the Southern HIV and Alcohol Research Consortium, or SHARC, presented “HIV, Alcohol and Public Health Research: Innovations and Challenges in the Care of Vulnerable Populations — SHARC Experience” to faculty, students and local health professionals.

Cook, member of UF’s Emerging Pathogens Institute, is collaborating with Federal University of Goiás faculty on public health epidemiology projects. In addition, SHARC has hosted five visiting Federal University of Goiás students or postdoctoral associates in recent years for educational and research experiences, and plans to host two more individuals next year.
