Meet: Haley Gemmell
Program: Master of Health Science, One Health
Undergraduate Degree: Bachelor of Science in Animal Sciences
Research Interests: The connection between different health risks seen in humans that come from animals and how they can be treated or mitigated.
Why did you choose the University of Florida?
As a now double Gator, I’ve truly enjoyed my time at UF and the communities I’ve been part of. I’m also excited to join new communities through this program.
What philosophy guides you in your education?
I try to always remember that doing your best is enough. It’s also important to know when to ask for help—and to not be afraid to ask when you need it.
If you could solve one environmental and/or global health problem, what would it be?
That’s a tough one. Bird flu is a big issue right now, so I’d say tackling animal-transmitted diseases in general—looking at how they spread and how we can better treat or prevent them—would be a priority.
What are your career goals?
My ultimate goal is to become a veterinarian. I want to use what I learned in undergrad, along with what I’ll gain from this program, to protect and care for animals.
