Why did you decide to join the MHS One Health program?

Nursing ignited my drive to help others in tangible ways. I have four years of experience as an RN in the emergency room and have acquired skills that make lasting impressions on individuals, whether by simply showing them kindness, being part of a team that prolonged their life, or being part of the team that saved them from deficits that would compromise their independence.

However, in the last year, these interventions have begun to feel short-lived and insufficient in addressing the social, financial, emotional, and environmental burdens my patients face, which I learned contribute largely to their physiological conditions. I seek to move my career and fervor toward tangibly helping populations; this, combined with my love of nature, led me to One Health.

I’ve experienced the benefits of a healthy body, nutritious meals, and nature on our mental and physical well-being. We cannot achieve optimum human health without protecting the health of all species and our ecosystems, ensuring food safety, and ensuring air quality, just to name a few examples. This is why the One Health approach was ideal for me, and I decided to join the program.

What do you plan to do with your MHS degree?

I have not set a specific plan because I look forward to learning and paving a new path during the program. However, I would like the knowledge and skills I acquire to lead to a job in Latin America. I recently visited the Amazon in Ecuador as well as beach towns in Nicaragua, and I have never been happier. I deeply resonate with these communities, their language, and their natural environment. I hope to learn more about them.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

In my spare time, I spoil my three dogs and three cats by taking them on long walks, playing with them, and feeding them treats. Since August, I have been learning to surf, which helps me connect with nature. Sometimes I sit on my board in the ocean and enjoy the view of dolphins and pelicans with my partner as we wait for a wave. I also spend time with my mom and friends, and occasionally I get to explore cool places around the world, even if it means working some overtime hours.

What would you like to share with others who may be considering the MHS One Health program?

I am convinced this is the right degree for someone seeking to live out and promote the core principles of One Health, such as equity, inclusivity, parity, socioecological equilibrium, and cross-disciplinarity. This is a good way to ensure you will not regret your decision.
