Meet: Jeantel Cheramy

Program: Public Health, PhD, Environmental Health concentration

Educational Background: Masters in Sustainable Development Practice, Bachelor of Environmental Engineering

Research Interests:  WASH, Environmental and Global Health, Risk Assessment, Exposure Science, Environmental Epidemiology, Toxicology

Why did you choose the University of Florida?

I first came to UF to complete my master’s degree in Sustainable Development and, to be honest, UF has surpassed my expectations since it offers a vibrant campus life with numerous extracurricular activities and organizations, fostering a sense of community and engagement among students. Additionally, its location in Gainesville provides access to diverse cultural experiences and outdoor recreational opportunities. With a strong faculty renowned for their research and teaching prowess, UF offers a rich learning environment conducive to personal, professional, and academic growth.

What philosophy guides you in your education?

Willpower + Determination = Success

What is your research experience?

During my research experience, I focused on analyzing the effectiveness of heavy metal removal from water using the Gift of Water (GOW) filter. Through experimental investigations and data analysis, I sought to understand the filter’s capability in eliminating contaminants such as lead, arsenic, iron, and copper. Using various analytical techniques, including spectrophotometry and atomic absorption spectroscopy, I evaluated the concentration levels of heavy metals before and after filtration. Additionally, I explored factors influencing the filtration efficiency, such as flow rate, contact time, and filter media composition. By systematically examining these variables, I aimed to contribute insights into optimizing the GOW filter for enhanced heavy metal removal, thus advancing efforts in providing safe drinking water solutions.

If you could solve one environmental and/or global health problem, what would it be?

I would like to solve the water scarcity around the world, particularly, in in developing world.

What are your career goals?

In short term, I aspire to be a public health researcher, and instructor/mentor at an academic institution. In long term, may be, to be at the head of the Environmental or Public Health Ministry in Haiti in order to develop and implement plans/programs that will promote environmental and public health of the Haitians.
