Meet: Islande Isaac

Program: Bachelor of Public Health

Expected Graduation: Spring 2027

Why did you decide to join the BPH program?

I decided to join the Public Health program because I realized I wasn’t going to become a medical doctor, as my parents hoped. As a first-generation college student, you get the idea that the only way to have a successful career is to: one, attend college; two, go to med school; and three, obtain a medical degree. Like many first-gen students, that was the plan I began to follow until I realized that, although I enjoy science, I didn’t enjoy it enough to pursue a career based solely on hardcore science. I re-evaluated my career goals and began researching health-related careers that didn’t involve becoming a medical doctor. That’s when I discovered Public Health during my second semester of freshman year. I asked my now mentor about the field and met with advisers to explore the opportunities the program offers. From the staff to the faculty to the students, I’ve received nothing but warm welcomes during my transition from Microbiology to Public Health. But it wasn’t until I began taking the course this fall (2024) that I realized how much I actually enjoyed the subject. Leaving my classrooms feeling fulfilled and enlightened confirmed I made the right choice.

What have been some of your favorite moments in the BPH program?

Some of my favorite moments have been taking classes with Professor Rick Kates and Professor Richard Tovar. Seeing how passionate both of them are inspires me and reassures me that I made the right decision to leave the pre-med track.

What do you plan to do with your degree?

With my degree, I plan to attend law school and practice health law because I feel that the field lacks diverse perspectives. Based on my personal experience with a lack of access to healthcare, I believe I can bring my passion to this field and represent the underrepresented.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

In my spare time, I enjoy strengthening my friendships with my housemates at the Southern Scholarship Foundation by watching movies and shows together. I also call my siblings whenever I have free time, and we chat and laugh. I cherish spending quality time with my friends and family.

What would you like to share with others who may be considering the BPH program?

I would say to pursue a career based on what you want, not on what your parents want. Ask yourself, “Will I be happy in this career a few years down the line?” If community is important to you, Public Health is a great field, as the community is special at such a large university.

Is there anything else you would like to share?

I truly believe I’ve found the right major and potential career path for me. I’m so glad to be in the PHHP college!
