May Smith-Hublou Best Paper 2024

May’s paper “Impacts of Deep Brain Stimulation of the Globus Pallidus Internus on Swallowing: A Retrospective, Cross-Sectional Study” was published in Dysphagia.

This study expands the previously limited literature suggesting that deep brain stimulation in the globus pallidus internus (GPi) has no impact on swallowing function in Parkinson disease, unlike the more common target, the subthalamic nucleus. This the first study of GPi stimulation to use multiple metrics of videofluoroscopic swallowing analysis to thoroughly examine swallowing function in this context, as well as the first to examine both unilateral and bilateral stimulation. This study can inform both clinical practice and further research investigations into the impacts of deep brain stimulation on swallowing function.
