Meet: Gabriella Montilva
Program: Bachelor of Public Health
Expected Graduation: Spring 2026
Why did you decide to join the BPH program?
Improving community health and well-being has always been a passion of mine, which is why I decided to pursue a bachelor’s degree in public health. Growing up, I saw firsthand how health inequalities can affect individuals and communities, which inspired me to learn more about addressing them. My goal of improving people’s lives aligns with public health’s emphasis on prevention, health education, and community involvement.
The degree also provides a strong foundation in policy-making, social determinants of health, and the functioning of health systems. I was especially interested in these aspects because I wanted to work on a larger scale to make lasting changes in health outcomes. This program has encouraged me to further pursue a career in health administration by allowing me to explore various health-related topics.
What have been some of your favorite moments in the BPH program?
Some of my favorite moments in the public health program have been the connections I’ve made and the incredible volunteer opportunities the school offers. I’ve had the chance to meet and work with classmates, professors, and professionals passionate about making a difference in public health, and their enthusiasm has been both inspiring and motivating.
The program has also provided unique opportunities to get involved in the community. Volunteering at different service sites has given me hands-on experience and a better understanding of how public health initiatives can directly impact people’s lives. These experiences have not only been rewarding but have also helped me grow personally and professionally.
What do you plan to do with your degree?
I plan to work in human resources or health administration. I’m particularly interested in how health organizations operate and how effective management can improve patient care and organizational efficiency. Ultimately, I hope to pursue a master’s degree in health administration, which will allow me to develop the skills needed to take on leadership roles and help shape the future of healthcare systems.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
In my spare time, I like to watch TV, try new meals, and spend time with friends. I enjoy exploring new restaurants and dishes, especially when I can share these experiences with loved ones. It’s a fantastic opportunity to unwind, have fun, and try new flavors.
What would you like to share with others who may be considering the BPH program?
I would tell others considering this program that it offers so much more beyond the typical roles of doctors, nurses, or other healthcare providers. Public health opens up many opportunities to work behind the scenes in healthcare, particularly within business and administration. There’s much to learn about healthcare systems, from policy-making and management to health education and community outreach.
The program provides a broad understanding of healthcare and allows you to explore different paths, making it a great choice if you’re looking to make a positive impact without necessarily working on the front lines of patient care. It’s about finding ways to improve health outcomes on a larger scale, and there’s a lot of room for growth in this field.
