Meet: Gianna Martello
Program: Doctor of Occupational Therapy
Expected Graduation: Fall 2024
Why did you decide to join the OTD program?
When looking for possible professions in the healthcare field, I stumbled upon occupational therapy during my second year of undergrad at the University of Florida. After shadowing a pediatric OT, I knew this was the profession for me! Whether working with children or adults, I love how OT focuses on an individualized approach to help clients become more independent in the activities they need and love to do. I love that no two people are the same and that you must constantly adapt to the person in front of you. Like many health professions, OT requires you to be caring, compassionate, empathetic, and creative. Once I realized that OT aligns with my values and beliefs, I knew it was the right profession for me.
What have been some of your favorite moments in the OTD program?
I have met my best friends and the best professors in the program! OT is a smaller profession, so the connections I’ve made will follow me throughout my career, which I love. My favorite moment, however, was at a UF football game with my family. We were discussing the OTD program and what I was doing that semester when a family sitting behind us overheard. One of them was interested in applying to OT school—what are the odds!
What do you plan to do with your degree?
Once I graduate this December, I know my opportunities will be endless. I enjoy working with various populations, so I plan to find a job and practice as an occupational therapist, doing what I love. A long-term career goal is to work in academia, which my doctoral capstone experience is focused on. I’m gathering in-depth knowledge about the ins and outs of working in higher education.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I have a big Labrador retriever puppy named Basil that I enjoy taking to parks, nature trails, and cuddling with in my spare time. He acts as my occupational balance from my school work.
What would you like to share with others who may be considering the OTD program?
If you’re considering applying to the OTD program, do it! I remember feeling nervous to apply, but the faculty, staff, and students are wonderful. I’ve made amazing friendships because of this program. It’s nice to have a smaller cohort of students you can really get to know and work with. You’ll also get to know the wonderful professors who are truly passionate about helping students.
