Lines, leads, and lab values oh my! The world of inpatient acute care can be medically complex, intimidating, and difficult to navigate with an occupation-based approach. Have no fear! Our panel of occupational therapy advanced practitioners are here to help! These wizards of acute care best practices represent four different healthcare organizations across the state and will share their expertise in how to prepare for and succeed as a level II fieldwork student, as an entry level clinician, or as an experienced clinician who is new to the acute care setting. The panel will identify evidence-based resources and tools to empower clinical competencies and confidence, share acute care case studies in the acute care context of clients and student scenarios, outline clinical competencies and soft skills required for acute care clinical readiness, and showcase program development and quality initiatives in their respective settings to elevate an occupation based approach within the interdisciplinary culture of acute care practice.
Target Audience
This course is well-suited for entry level occupational therapists as well as other professionals with an interest in inpatient acute care and rehabilitation.
Educational Level
Introductory: Information is geared to practitioners with little or no knowledge of the subject matter. Focus is on providing general introductory information.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, learners will be able to:
- Identify the culture of interdisciplinary inpatient acute clinical practice.
- Recognize the entry-level competencies required for success in the inpatient acute environment.
- Describe lines, leads, and lab values.
- Demonstrate and implement assessment and intervention tools and strategies for success in inpatient acute.
- Prioritize knowledge, competencies, and resources to master for success in inpatient acute.
- Examine success and failure case studies of level II students and new clinicians, and relate this to clinical readiness for the inpatient acute environment.
- Develop OT driven initiatives to elevate an occupation-based approach in acute care
Completion Requirements
1 Contact Hour for State of Florida Occupational Therapy practitioners will be awarded upon a successful completion of a multiple choice post-test. Participants will be able to print a certificate of completion after completing a short course evaluation in addition to the post-test.

Instructional Methods
One (1) hour course during which the learner will view a streaming video presentation, reference PowerPoint® slides, and take a multiple choice post-test.
