Last month, Tyrus Fleetwood was named this year’s recipient of the Dr. John J. Benton Endowment Fund. The purpose of the Fund is to provide scholarships to students in the Master of Public Health program. Fleetwood first found out about the scholarship from a professor and was selected for demonstrating the traits that the Fund looks for in a candidate: integrity, humility, compassion, good scholarship, and a good sense of humor.

Fleetwood is in his second year of the MPH program and is studying Social and Behavioral Sciences. “I was drawn to SBS because I saw this as an avenue to build upon the knowledge from undergrad and expand who and how I can help,” he explained.

In addition to his studies, Fleetwood also serves as the president of the Public Health Student Association. He is planning to use the funds from the award to help him finish up in his final year in the MPH program and to help him in applying to law school. “After completing the MPH, god-willing, I will be accepted into one of the law school I am applying to,” said Fleetwood. “From there, I will go on to study public interest law and take what I have learned from my MPH studies to further my agenda to help, inspire, and be of service to all people.”
