EGH Student Mirna Amaya Recognized with Model of Leadership Award

mirnapicMirna Amaya has been selected as the recipient of this year’s Model of Leadership Award. The award recognizes a student who actively works to instill positive social change in the community and exemplifies the values of true leadership.

Mirna studies a PhD in Environmental and Global Health at the College of Public Health and Health Professions. She has volunteered her time in a multitude of causes, fulfilled committee roles, and lead student organizations.

In the past year, she has served as: Student Representative for the College of Public Health Diversity Committee (01/2014- present); Founder and co-president of the Public Health and Health Professions Doctoral Student Council (01/2014-present); Graduate Student Representative to the University of Florida Faculty Senate (08/2014-present); International Affairs Chair to the Graduate Student Council (10/2015-present); Alternate- Student Representative to the University of Florida Graduate Council (11/2015-present); Environmental and Global Health Representative to the Graduate Student Council (01/2016-present); PHHP Student Representative for the Health Science Center Graduate Student Lounge Advisory Committee (01/2016-present), Inaugural FRANK Scholar Volunteer for the College of Journalism and Communications (11/2015-03/2016), Health Services Research Management and Policy Representative to the Graduate Student Council (08/2014-12/2015), Volunteer Director for the 2015 Global Health Case Competition for the University of Florida Global Health Council (10/2014-03/2015), and member of the UFlourish Hispanic-Latino Student Advisory Committee at the Counseling and Wellness Center (10/2014-03/2015).

She also serves as a student volunteer for the English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) parent coordinator for the Alachua County Public Schools, by mentoring and tutoring middle and high school children that have immigrated to the U.S (10/2015-present).

The award will be presented to Mirna at the 2016 University of Florida Impact Awards Recognition Dinner on April 13th.
