Morrill Act Celebration: Rural Health

Logo-LandGrantThe College of Public Health and Health Professions will host “Morrill Act Celebration: Rural Health” on Friday, Feb. 15 from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the HPNP Complex, room G101.

The panel discussion on rural health in Florida will be moderated by Dean Michael G. Perri and features two guest experts on Florida rural health. Gail Bellamy, Ph.D., a professor and director of the Center for Rural Health Research and Policy at the Florida State University College of Medicine will speak on “Rural Health and Land Grant Colleges: The Continuing Legacy of the Morrill and Smith-Lever Acts.” Pamela Blackmon, the health officer/administrator of the Suwannee and Lafayette County Health Departments will present “The 3 ‘Rs’ of Rural Public Health.” The seminar is free and open to the public.

The Morrill Act of 1862 established the land-grant university system and provided thousands of Americans access to knowledge they most likely never would have experienced.
