UF National Public Health Week events

April 4-8, 2011

It’s that time of year – National Public Health Week! The UF Public Health Student Association has planned a fun-filled week to educate students and the public about the contributions of public health to our communities. This year’s theme is “Safety is No Accident: Live Injury Free!” Each day will focus on a different aspect of public safety.

Monday: Safety at Home

  • PHC 6601 Seminar, HPNP Building, Room G101, 12:00PM – 1:00PM

“The Clinical Significance of Sleep-Related Breathing Disorders Among Older Adults

  • The UF Public Health Student Association will be tabling from 10 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on the ground floor of the HPNP Complex. Learn about:

                        – Gun safety: properly securing firearms to prevent injury

                        – Proper storage and handling of household cleaners

                        – Smoke detectors

                        – Carbon monoxide detectors

 Tuesday: Safety at Work

 “The New World of Data Linkages in Clinical Epidemiology: Are we Being Brave or Foolhardy?”

                        – Maintaining a healthy diet at work

                        – Learn the hidden hazards of microwave cooking, and how to do it safely

 Wednesday: Safety at Play

  • The UF Public Health Student Association will be tabling from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Learn about:

                        – How to keep the pounds off safely with exercise tips

                        – Florida bike laws to keep in mind when travelling in this lovely weather      

– Sunscreen tips when celebrating the end of the spring semester poolside

                        -Safe drinking advice!

Thursday: Safety on the Go

  • PHSA is sponsoring a special seminar: Safety on the Move

Featuring:

Officer deJesus from the University Police Department

                        Topic: Safe Driving Habits

                        Time: 12:30 – 1:30 p.m.

                        Location: HPNP Complex, room G114

                        Topic: The Hazards of Texting While Driving

                        Time: 1:30 – 2:00 p.m.

Friday: Safety in the Community

  • PHSA will be tabling outside student services in the HPNP Complex promoting neighborhood watch and preventing youth violence
  • Additionally, all second year MPH students will be presenting their final projects at various times throughout the day.
