Dr. Harle’s research focuses on understanding how patients, consumers and health care professionals perceive and use health information and information technology. He draws on theory and methods from behavioral decision making, risk communication and machine learning in order to improve information systems that support health-related decision making. This research has investigated consumer use of personalized disease risk assessment web sites, hospital and physician use of electronic health records and long-term cancer survivors’ health risk perceptions. A recent line of research investigates how consumers compare and choose among competing insurance plans that are offered through health insurance exchange web sites.
