Health Science Center Pinning Ceremony
Health Science Center honored several PHHP employees at the annual HSC service pin award ceremony on May 5, 2009. Employees were recognized for their total years of service to the University of Florida.

Superior Accomplishment Awards 2009
Congratulations to the College of Public Health and Health Professions' two Superior Accomplishment division-level award recipients for 2009:

Lilliana Bell is a Coordinator, Research Programs/Services for the Department of Health Services Research, Management and Policy
Jason Rogers is a Coordintor, Computer Applications for the Department of Occupational Therapy

Bell and Rogers were honored March 3, along with other Division 5 (HSC) winners, at at awards ceremony and luncheon. We thank them both for their important contributions to our College and wish them the best of luck as they go on to compete at the University level in an awards ceremony to be held in April.

Stillwell named PHHP Employee of the Year

Donna Stilwell was named the College of Public Health and Health Professions’ 2008 Employee of the Year at the college’s 50th anniversary celebration dinner Nov. 21.

Stilwell, the office manager for the department of health services research, management and policy, was honored for her role in implementing efficient and cost effective processes for the department’s administrative functions. Stilwell joined the department during a time of significant change, including staff transition, budgetary cuts and growth in the department’s research, teaching and service activities, nominators said. Despite these challenges, Stilwell’s efforts have allowed the department to operate smoothly.

“Donna established organizing principles and ways of working that made all of our lives easier and our ‘outcomes’ better,” wrote one nominator.

Stilwell was also recognized for her superior attitude and pleasant demeanor.

“Her positive attitude and behavior help to maintain an atmosphere of respect and productivity in our office,” according to a nominator.

Said a nominator: “HSRMP is better, stronger and happier because Donna is a leader and member of our department.”

PHHP faculty member and students receive UF International Center awards

College of Public Health and Health Professions faculty member Alba Amaya-Burns, M.D., and graduate students Manuela Corti and Milap Sandhu are recipients of awards from UF's International Center.

Amaya-Burns, a clinical associate professor in the department of behavioral science and community health, received an International Educator Award. She came to the University of Florida after working for five years at USAID-El Salvador as the infectious desease project manager specialist at the U.S. Embassy. There she was responsible for the management and implementation of HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis programs. At UF, Amaya-Burns has established international educational programs to benefit disadvantaged communities in El Salvador, Guatemala and Mexico. She has also sought to establish relationships with international universities, especially for Master of Public Health students and for doctoral students in the college and across campus.

Corti, a licensed physical therapist from Milan, Italy, is a student in the college's rehabilitation science doctoral program. Corti has participated in three task forces in the Upper-Extremity Research Initiative, implemented transcranial magnetic stimulation techniques in the Neural Control of Movement Lab, and contributed to the development of a National Innovative Research Grant to the American Heart Association. She also presented a paper at an international within her first year in the graduate program.

Sandhu, a native of India, is investigating treatments to improve respiratory recovery after cervical spinal cord injury as a student in the rehabilitation science program. He is already co-author on several publications and is in line to be first author on three more research projects in the near future. Sandhu has received grants from the college and the Tallahassee Memorial Neuroscience Center's Bryan W. Robinson Endowment to support his ongoing research program.

Davis Productivity Awards

Mr. Shankar Manamalkav, Dr. Rus Bauer, Ms. Andrea BurneAndrea Burne and Shankar Manamalkav are winners of a Notable Cash Award of $300 in this year’s Davis Productivity Award program. Burne and Manamalkav developed and implemented NERVE, a patient scheduling, tracking, and financial accounting system. It handles various aspects of clinic operations and billings and collections for the Psychology Clinic.

The Davis Productivity Awards honor individuals and work units for innovation, creativity, and smart work that measurably increase performance and productivity in the delivery of state services and products. Beginning in 2001, awards also were made to individuals and work units for adapting and implementing previous years' award-winning achievements to create more added value. The program awards cash, commemorative plaques, certificates of commendation, honorable mention, and other public recognition. Cash awards range from $250 to $2,500.

Superior Accomplishment Awards 2008

The Superior Accomplishment Awards program recognizes staff members who contribute outstanding and meritorious service, efficiency and/or economy, or to the quality of life provided to students and employees. Recognition by one’s peers is the highest point of achievement. Division-level award recipients receive cash awards of $200 each, then compete for university-level awards, which offer eight $1,000 and six $2,000 cash awards. These folks were honored at a luncheon at the Savannah Grande in March and will participate in a breakfast in April where university wide winners will be announced. Congratulations to the following Division 5 2008 Superior Accomplishment Award winners in PHHP, Iris Campbell, Lorie Martin, and Kristy Radeker.

Employee of the Year 2007

Mr. Todd Fraser Todd Fraser was named the College of Public Health and Health Professions’ 2007 Employee of the Year at the annual faculty/staff appreciation dinner Oct. 26.

Fraser, the coordinator of administrative services in the department of occupational therapy, received numerous nominations from faculty, staff and students who described him as the “go-to” person in his department.

Fraser was recognized for his problem-solving ability, dedication and willingness to assist employees and students, even in difficult situations. Wrote one nominee, “Todd is a pleasure to work with and his positive attitude, humor and openness promote a feeling of ‘family’ within the department.”

Nominees also noted that Fraser treats everyone with respect, employees and students alike. “Todd demonstrates consistent respect for others, regardless of their role. Instead of treating me as a doctoral student, Todd has always treated me as a friend,” said one nominee.

Cathy Di LenaCathy Di Lena was named the College of Public Health and Health Professions’ 2006 Employee of the Year at the college’s annual Faculty/Staff appreciation dinner, held October 13.

Di Lena, a human resources specialist, received nominations from individuals in half of the college’s departments, a testament to her exemplary performance. She was recognized for her accuracy, attention to detail, patience, helpfulness, and ability to go above and beyond to resolve issues. Among the comments from Di Lena’s nominators were: “She always makes the person coming through her door feel important” and “Her positive attitude is contagious.”

 

Employees of the Year 2005
Vera Hemphill and Jessie Runge were honored as Employees of the Year at the college’s annual Faculty/Staff appreciation dinner, held October 14, 2005. Hemphill is a senior clerk in the department of clinical and health psychology, and Runge is the office manager in the department of communicative disorders.

Three staff members were honored as Employees of the Year at the annual staff and faculty appreciation dinner. They are Andrea Burne, assistant director for health administration in the department of clinical and health psychology; Janet Haire, office manager in the department of rehabilitation counseling; and Shankar Manamalkav, coordinator of computer applications in the department of clinical and health psychology.
